Canisius College

College Description
One of 28 prestigious Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, Canisius College shares in the 450-year-old Jesuit traditions of academic excellence, concern for the individual and service to others. At Canisius, education fosters the development of the whole person and properly orients students in their relations with others and with God. ð Our size is ideal. We are large enough for variety-with a choice of over 40 majors and programs, over 90 clubs and athletic activities above and beyond 21 NCAA Division I sports-but small enough so every person can be fully involved on campus. A "college town," Buffalo, New York, is also a friendly, family-oriented city offering sports, live music and theater, and recreation as well as many internship opportunities only 10 minutes away on the Metro Rail.

Academic Life
In cooperation with other U.S. colleges and universities, Canisius arranges on an individual basis for students to spend a semester or a year studying in various countries overseas. Popular choices include France, Spain, Germany, Italy, England, and Australia. Canisius has its own semester-abroad programs in Oviedo, Spain, and London, England.

Campus Life
Campus clubs and organizations add excitement to college life, help students make new friends, and often provide another dimension to career preparation. ð Students may choose from more than 90 college-sponsored organizations related to service, the media, academics, religious and social interests. These clubs sponsor speakers, films, festivals, fund-raising events for charity, dances, and many other special events throughout the year. ð Sporting events are also a favorite pastime of Canisius students. The Koessler Athletic Center (KAC) and the Demske Sports Complex offer students several activities ranging from jogging, swimming, and tennis to archery and weightlifting. Students are also encouraged to participate in the wide range of campus intramural sports. ð You will enjoy the sense of community at Canisius, a campus which is often described by students as "friendly," "supportive" and "caring." The ultimate goal of a Jesuit education, whether in class, in church, or in the community-such as service at a soup kitchen-is developing men and women for others.

Facilities and Resources
IThe Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library is a state-of-the-art facility housing the equivalent of over 400,000 volumes of books, periodicals, and microforms as well as a fully automated catalog. ð Instructional computing facilities include over 150 personal computers. Macintosh and IBM-compatible personal computers are equipped with color monitors, laser printers, word processing, electronic mail, spreadsheet software, and access to the Internet. ð An extensive program of athletics for men and women includes 21 varsity sports (NCAA Division I), athletic clubs, and intramurals. The Koessler Athletic Center and Demske Sports Complex-a multipurpose, outdoor athletic complex featuring football, lacrosse, and soccer fields, a baseball diamond, and two softball diamonds on a synthetic turf surface-are open to the entire college community.

Financial Aid
Each year, Canisius College offers an unlimited number of scholarships, valued up to full tuition, to incoming freshmen. Full tuition scholarships are awarded exclusively on academic merit. Canisius also awards partial scholarships based solely on academic merit. The majority of Canisius College scholarships are based on academic merit and financial need. ð Canisius participates in federal and New York State financial aid programs. Students are required to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a Canisius College Student Financial Aid Application, and, for New York State residents, a New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) Application. We recommend that students complete and mail these forms by January 31.

Admission Requirements
The secondary school program of studies should include 16 units of credit in academic subjects. For a B.A., 4 units of English, 2 units of foreign language, 2 units of mathematics, 1 unit of science, 2 units of social science and 4 electives. For a B.S. in the natural sciences and a B.A. in mathematics, 1/2 additional unit of mathematics and 1 additional unit of science are required. ð Prospective students are advised to submit an application during the fall semester preceding the year they wish to enter the college. Canisius employs a rolling admissions policy that enables students to apply any time during the academic year. The college's Admission Committee reviews the completed application, and the student is notified of a decision within six weeks. ð Canisius College adheres to the College Entrance Examination Board's Candidates' Reply Date Agreement of May 1. The CRDA enables applicants who have been approved for admission to Canisius to consider their choices carefully before making a final decision. Students who have been accepted for admission to Canisius may submit a freshman deposit upon receipt of their letter of acceptance or may withhold the deposit until May 1, thereby taking advantage of CRDA. ð Students who perform successfully on the College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement Test may earn advanced placement in selected disciplines at Canisius. Students who earn a score of 4 or 5 on the appropriate exam will be granted credit and advance standing based on the review and approval of the appropriate department chairman.
