Since most students reside on campus and 60% are from hometowns over 300 miles away, many stay around on weekends to take full advantage of planned activities. Plays, musical events of all types, athletic contests, film series, and social activities like dances and coffeehouse performances keep the weekends busy. The Pisgah National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the world-famous Chattooga, Green, Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers (site of l996 Olympic whitewater events) beckon campers, mountain bikers, and kayakers. Winter offers cross country snow skiing along the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway and down-hill skiing on various runs within easy driving distance.

Adding to Brevard's quality of life is the freedom from worry about crime. Rand McNally and other authorities have rated Brevard as one of the safest communities in the U.S. The well-lit campus, the system of emergency call boxes, and excellent around-the-clock security staff contribute to the sense of safety.

At Brevard College, we encourage you to stretch yourself personally as well as intellectually. This may take you far beyond the campus for study or volunteer missions abroad. The College offers semester-long and summer study opportunities in Austria, at Westminster College, Oxford, England, and in Greece, Turkey, Mexico, and the Republic of Georgia. Recent Brevard College service teams have worked in Central and South America and southern Africa.

Brevard College
The benefits of a four-year status will become more
evident every day in expanded opportunities.

College Description
Brevard College is an exceptional four-year residential college of arts and sciences located in the mountains of North Carolina. Here you'll choose from a richly diverse curriculum and receive the supportive personal attention of faculty and staff. Whether it's around a campfire in the forest, on the theatre stage, at the library, over the Internet, on the playing field or in a seminar room, you'll meet new people and new ideas that expand your horizons. You'll learn to see current events within the context of history, to reason ethically, to marvel at the diversity of humanity, to be a good steward of the earth and its resources, and to know the joys of living a vigorous physical life together with the quiet pleasures of serving others. At Brevard College you can build on the best aspects of your character and talents while discovering new resources for turning your dreams into reality.

Academic Life
If you want the advantages of small classes and individualized attention from gifted teachers and mentors, then you should consider Brevard College. Our student-faculty ratio is a very personalized 8 to 1. Whether you sit for a lecture, engage in the intellectual give-and-take of a seminar, or lace up your boots for a field trip into the forest, you'll usually be part of a small group. Brevard classes are taught by professors who care about knowing you as an individual. Your work in class or lab is carefully designed to promote your intellectual growth and provide the solid academic foundation you'll need in the future.

Brevard has long been known for its devotion to individual students. In additional to a rich range of courses in the traditional liberal arts and sciences, with numerous majors and emphases available, the College offers special remedial instruction in math, writing, reading, study techniques and time management. The Writing Center, Math Lab, Learning Enhancement Center, and Language Center provide individualized instruction beyond classroom hours. Faculty and peer tutors staff academic support labs. State-of the-art computer labs provide the latest computers and software and a campus-wide network now links all dorm rooms with the library email and the Internet.

Campus Life
Clubs and activities outside class offer exploration and awareness of a different kind. Here you'll build friendships based on shared interests and concerns. And because many students are new to college life, there will be ample opportunities to lead. Sports and recreational activities in the area's unexcelled mountain wilderness areas and rivers, art and music organizations, journalism, student government or environmental activism — a wide variety of options gives you space to discover who you are and what you have to offer.

Mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, or horseback riding are but a few of the outdoor activities available to all students. Your adventure begins just minutes from the College in the Pisgah National Forest and well-known Blue Ridge Parkway. Whether you are a beginning hiker or avid rock climber, whether you enjoy a cool float down the river or the thrill of a Class V rapid, Brevard College has an adventure for you.

Facilities and Resources
Brevard College has a modern 130-acre campus with 85% of the students living on campus and representing over 30 states and 16 countries. Between classes, you'll find Coltrane Commons, Brevard's Student Center in the heart of campus, an ideal meeting place. Catch up with friends for a bite to eat, browse new books in the King's Creek Bookstore, watch a movie or sporting event on the large-screened TV, participate in a student government debate, or enjoy live entertainment in the coffeehouse. Academic and social life are fully integrated into your life in the college's various residence halls. Of special note is The Village, the College's innovative new residential community.

The grand new Porter Center for Performing Arts with its exceptional year-long performance series Vivace!, now joins the Dunham Music Hall, and the Sims Art Center in a remarkable cultural triad that offers two large concert halls, a state-of-the-art playhouse, a large outdoor amphitheater, well-equipped labs for computer aided design (CAD) and electronic music, two art galleries, a dance studio, and many teaching and rehearsal spaces.

Over the past two years, Brevard College teams have won back-to-back national championships in women's soccer and competed in NJCAA College World Series of Baseball. Four members of our current coaching staff have been named national coaches of the year and two are members of national coaching halls of fame. Our athletes have won over 250 All-American certificates to date and six National Men's Cross Country Team Championship titles. They've also won national individual championships in the marathon, women's cross country and men's 1000 meters in track.

Student athletes who want to compete on the intercollegiate level can choose from men's basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, track and golf or women's basketball, cross country, tennis, track, volleyball, softball and soccer. With a full-time athletic trainer on staff and a well-equipped training room, athletes can devote time to fitness development at any level. Junior varsity competition is available in several sports.
