College Description
Brescia University's 9-acre campus is located near downtown Owensboro, Kentucky. The University is just 45 minutes from Evansville, Indiana; 2 hours southwest of Louisville, Kentucky (home of the Kentucky Derby); and 2 hours north of Nashville, Tennessee.
Owensboro is well known as the "Barbecue Capital of the World." Owensboro has a Barbecue Festival in May and a Summer Festival. The Riverpark Center in Owensboro offers a multitude of productions like Grease, Chicago, and Cats. The Executive Inn Rivermont features nationally known entertainers like Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Toby Keith.
Brescia University prepares its students for successful careers and for service to others. Brescia was founded by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph in 1950 as a Catholic liberal arts college. It began as the Mount Saint Joseph College for Women at Maple Mount, Kentucky, in 1925. The school is committed to the concept of value-centered education with a strong emphasis on Christian values. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredits Brescia to award associate and baccalaureate degrees, the Master of Science in Management degree, and the Master of Science degree in curriculum and instruction. The University of Louisville offers the Master of Science in Social Work on Brescia's campus. Students pursuing their master's in social work may also complete their field placement work locally where it is convenient for them. All of Brescia's teacher education programs are accredited by the Kentucky Department of Education.
Currently, 837 students are enrolled at the University. Thirty-eight percent are men; 62 percent are women. The average age of full-time students is 23. The cosmopolitan student body comes from as far away as Canada, Cyprus, Japan, Venezuela, and the West Indies, as well as states from Alaska to California.
Academic Life
There are two semesters at Brescia-fall and spring. Intersession is offered in May. A summer session is offered in June and in July. In addition, Brescia has a Weekend College program that is divided into four modules. Candidates for the associate degree must earn a minimum of 63 credit hours, with a minimum of 27 hours of general education requirements. Bachelor's degree candidates must earn a minimum of 128 credit hours, of which at least 42 credit hours are in upper-division courses. They must also complete 57 credit hours of general education courses and complete a major program of study, with a 2.5 (C) grade point average or better in all upper-division courses in the major and minor. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale must be achieved. The Center for English as a Second Language (ESL) at Brescia University offers a variety of both full-time and part-time English language courses. The two levels (intermediate and advanced) in the Intensive Summer Session are content-oriented courses that focus on speaking/listening, reading, writing, and the study skills necessary for academic success. Brescia graduates should be committed to the following values: continued personal, intellectual, and spiritual growth; the welfare of others; respect for the physical environment; and respect for the appreciation of the diversity in cultures. Brescia's Ministry Formation Program is the only accredited undergraduate program of its kind in the nation.
Brescia University offers an Associate of Arts degree in catechetical leadership ministry, human relations, liberal arts, and pastoral ministry. Brescia also offers the Associate of Science degree in business, engineering studies, and engineering technology. The Bachelor of Arts degree offers a variety of study areas, including art, art education, English, English: emphasis in professional writing, graphic design, history, integrated studies, pastoral ministry, pre-art therapy, psychology, religious studies, social studies, and Spanish. Minors for the Bachelor of Arts degree may be chosen from the following: English, history, pastoral ministry, political science, psychology, religious studies, Spanish, sociology, and women's studies. Majors for the Bachelor of Science degree are accounting, biology, business, business: economics and finance emphasis, business: human resource development or management emphasis, chemistry, communication sciences and disorders, computer and mathematical sciences, early elementary education, general studies, mathematics, medical technology, middle grades education, science with an area of concentration, and special education. Minors for the Bachelor of Science degree are accounting, biology, business, chemistry, computer studies, finance/economics, mathematics, and physics. Brescia also offers the Bachelor of Social Work degree and a dual-degree program in chemistry/chemical engineering through the University of Louisville.
Teacher certification/endorsement is offered in the following areas: art education; early elementary education; middle grades and secondary (8-12) education in English, mathematics, science, social studies, and Spanish; and special education in the areas of learning and behavior disorders and moderate and severe disabilities. Candidates graduate with a license to teach in Kentucky schools. The license is reciprocal in some other states.
Campus Life
About 74 percent of the students live off campus. Students can choose from a variety of extracurricular activities, including the Brescia Broadcast (student newspaper), the Brescia Owensboro Student Catholic Organization, the Locke Society (students with interests in political science and history), the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Catholic Honor Society, the Brescia Student National Education Association, the International Student Organization, and the Ichabod Society (students with interests in all forms of literature). Students may also participate in the Student Government Association, the Brescia Philosophical Society, the Brescia Science Association, the Brescia Writers Group, the Council for Exceptional Children, the Handbell Choir, the Psychology Club, the Spanish Club, the National Speech Language Hearing Association, the Social Work Club, the Math and Computer Club, and the choir. The Brescia Little Theater performs dramatic productions in an intimate setting. The Parents in Action club is open to any student who is currently a parent. Students and faculty members may enjoy lunchtime concerts featuring jazz, blues, and chamber music. Campus facilities include an indoor walking track, a racquetball court, fitness facilities, weight room, and an attractively furnished Study Pavilion.
Facilities and Resources
The Brescia University campus consists of seventeen buildings within a two-block area near downtown Owensboro. Facilities include the library, science building, administration building, campus center, graduate center, and residence halls. The library, campus center, and classroom buildings are accessible to people with disabilities. The library has more than 180,000 volumes and is fully automated, with access to the Kentucky Library Network (300 libraries). Biology and medical technology students view the human body through computer simulations with the powerful ADAM, while mathematics students graph 3-D space curves and solve large systems of equations with Mathematica. Computer science and physics students learn from state-of-the-art IBM hardware and software packages, including the ability to analyze experiments by digital imaging. There are five computer labs available for students on campus. Every student may receive access to the Internet and e-mail. Students in Brescia's modern language classes and the English as a second language program have access to a state-of-the-art digital computer lab.
Athletics/Sports / Coaches Directory
Brescia University is a NAIA Institution competing in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC). Other schools competing in the KIAC are Asbury College, Berea College, Bethel College, IU-Southeast, Midway College (women’s sports only), and Spalding University. The men’s and women’s basketball programs compete at the NAIA Division I level. BU provides athletic grant-in-aids in all sports. Grant-in-aid determination is made by the head coaches of the respective sports.
Financial Aid / Scholarships
More than 85 percent of Brescia students receive scholarships or financial aid. Students receive aid through the many federal and state programs in which the University participates and through the University's deferred payment plan. Brescia also awards scholarships annually to incoming students on the basis of academic excellence and leadership qualities. Students who wish to be considered for financial aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Preference is given to applications received by March 1. Students may obtain the FAFSA by contacting their high school counselor or the University's Web site listed below.
Admission Requirements / Application
Applications to Brescia are reviewed on an individual basis. Grades and course work receive strong consideration. College-preparatory and liberal arts courses are recommended. Standardized test scores are taken into consideration. Students are asked to submit a high school transcript, showing proof of graduation date, or GED score report and an ACT or SAT score report. Transfer students must submit official transcripts from each college they attended. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for nonnative English speakers.
Applications are considered as they are received. Applications and transcripts should be submitted with a $25 nonrefundable application fee. Admission is on a rolling basis. Applications must be received by March 15 for scholarship consideration.
