College Description
Arkansas State University (ASU) offers an ideal blend between the personal contact and friendliness of small institutions and the broad range of academic programs and cultural, social and intellectual opportunities which are found at much larger universities. Founded in 1909, the university's commitment to excellence in higher education is demonstrated by its accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, as well as 11 specialized accrediting organizations. In addition, the university holds membership in 22 organizations that support the highest educational standards. The university's philosophy of education may be found in its mission statement: "We pursue and share knowledge within a caring community that prepares students in challenging and diverse ways to become more productive global citizens."

The educational needs of approximately 10,000 students are served by the university's main campus. ASU is located on 900 acres in the city of Jonesboro, a progressive community of 51,000 in the northeastern portion of the state. Jonesboro is just one hour's drive from Memphis, Tennessee and two hours from the state's capital city of Little Rock.

Academic Life
Dedicated to teaching, research and service, Arkansas State University provides students with the broad educational foundations that help develop critical thinking and analytical skills, decision-making capabilities and communication skills. ASU students may choose from nearly 90 undergraduate programs and 65 graduate programs, including master's, specialist and doctorate programs. Courses are offered through 23 departments in eight colleges and two independent departments. Opportunities for earning college credit also exist through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Advanced Placement (AP). For exceptionally qualified students, the university's Honors Program offers special opportunities for students to develop their abilities to think independently and to become familiar with the relationships among different academic disciplines. Bachelors' degree programs and upper level course are also offered through ASU degree centers in four cities around the state--Blytheville, Forrest City, Fort Smith and West Memphis. The academic year consists of two semesters (fall/spring) and two five-week summer terms.

Campus Life/ Campus Tour
Arkansas State University students are active in the more than 160 student organizations which exist across campus. For those interested in greek life, ASU has eight national sororities and thirteen national fraternities. Student organizations are affiliated with every academic college on campus, and there are a myriad of special interest activities available in which students may become involved. Students also are active in the Student Government Association which provides an official voice through which students express their opinions and concerns through the campus-wide Shared Governance Process. Other outlets for campus involvement include a thriving intramural sports program, the Student Activities Board, the student newspaper The Herald, the yearbook staff, Presidential and Indian Ambassadors, religious organizations, Black Student Association and the International Students Association.

Facilities and Resources
The Dean B. Ellis Library, which features a bell tower that dominates the Jonesboro skyline, is the highlight of the campus tour. The library-museum complex totals approximately 264,000 square feet, with total holdings in excess of 1.4 million volumes. Students and faculty enjoy a computerized card catalog which is accessible through campus network and computer dial-in services. The Laboratory Sciences Center is a sophisticated complex of 14,000 square feet which contains 25 laboratory areas, photographic facilities, environmental chambers, a greenhouse and state-of-the-art scientific equipment. The physical education complex has basketball and racquetball courts, weight rooms, a six-lane indoor swimming pool and a gymnastics area. The Communications building features the latest radio-television and photojournalism equipment in professionally equipped studios, control rooms, darkrooms and the state's largest TV studio.

ASU students are housed in three residence halls for women and two for men. All halls are fully air-conditioned and sport computer labs, laundry facilities, free basic cable and local telephone services. Weight rooms are available in both of the men's halls and in two of the women's halls. There are also on-campus facilities for married students.

Athletics/Varisty Sports
Arkansas State University participates in 14 sports in NCAA Division I, the highest level of intercollegiate athletics, and is a member of the Sun Belt Conference for 13 of those sports. In fact, ASU has won the coveted Sun Belt Commissioner's Cup twice in the last four years, a prize which honors the league school with the most successful total athletic program. There are seven sports for men and seven sports for women. The ASU Convocation Center, home of the Indian basketball team, seats 10,000 people for athletic events and concerts. It also houses an indoor track facility.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
ASU administers four types of financial aid: loans, grants, scholarships and work-study programs. Loans may be obtained through the Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Stanford Student Loan and the Nursing Student Loan programs. Types of grants which are available are the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, the State Scholarship Grant, the Nursing Student Grant, the Law Enforcement Education Program Grant and the State Scholarship Grant Award. Privately funded scholarships are also available. The Federal Work-Study Program provides students with part-time employment, and grants-in-aid are available in athletics, art, drama, and music. General scholarships for entering freshmen are also offered. Over 55% of all full-time ASU students receive some sort of aid. Application forms for financial aid should be filed as soon after January 1 as possible to ensure availability of funds.

Admission Requirements / Application
Students may apply for early admission on a seven semester transcript if they have the state-approved core, their cumulative grade point average is 2.75 or higher, and their English, math, reading and composite scores on the ACT are 19 or higher (or comparable SAT scores). Students will be fully admitted on an eight semester transcript if they have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, have the state-approved core and have English, math, reading and composite scores of 19 or better on the ACT (or comparable SAT scores).
