Alfred University
Alfred, New York 14802

Alfred University is set on a 232-acre campus in the foothills of the
Allegheny Mountains.
College Description
Founded in 1836, Alfred University is the oldest coeducational institution in New York State and one of the oldest in the nation. Pioneer Seventh Day Baptists who settled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains founded Alfred University as a select school. The scenic 232-acre hillside campus adjoining the village of Alfred is home to 2,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students representing over 40 states and 20 countries. Alfred is about 70 miles south of Rochester and a short drive from many outdoor attractions, such as Letchworth State Park, Stony Brook Park, and the Finger Lakes. Alfred University is nonsectarian and is comprised of both privately endowed and publicly endowed colleges. Alfred University's five schools offer a wide range of academic programs in liberal arts, business, engineering and art. Alfred provides the facilities, technology and curriculum of a larger school in a close-knit, student-centered environment. Teaching is a top priority of faculty members and academic achievement is expected from students who are accepted under a selective admissions policy.
Academic Life
Alfred University is comprised of the privately endowed College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Engineering and Professional Studies, and the publicly endowed New York State College of Ceramics which includes the School of Ceramic Engineering and Materials Science and the School of Art and Design. With a four-semester on-campus residency requirement, Alfred's campus is residential, offering students a variety of housing options. Residence halls are active communities and sponsor social, cultural and educational programming on a regular basis. Alfred also offers University operated common interest houses. Outside of the residence halls, nearly 100 student clubs and organizations including Forest People, WALF radio station, ALANA (African, Latino, Asian, Native American) Team, Fiat Lux student newspaper, Women's Issues Coalition, Student Volunteers for Community Action and Greek life (8 fraternities and 4 sororities), keep Alfred students active and involved. Theatre, music and dance productions are also popular among students. The Student Activities Board (SAB) brings entertainment to the University, including comedians, bands (both small and large acts), and a weekly coffee house series. On-campus movies, dances, speakers, and cultural events are popular among all students. The village of Alfred offers restaurants and shops, and the University offers weekend Venture Van trips to malls, museums, and events.
Facilities and Resources
At Alfred, students find readily accessible, state-of- the-art facilities including an observatory, the Powell Campus Center (theater, dining hall, caf and the Knight Club), the Miller Performing Arts Center (dance studios, individual and group rehearsal rooms, theater), and Harder Hall (art facilities including studio space, galleries, an auditorium and a kiln room). There are tennis courts and an omniturf multi-purpose field adjacent to the McLane Center. There are hiking and biking trails on campus and Brentwood stables are a short trip from Alfred.
Financial Aid / Scholarships
Last year, the University funded aid provided over $13 million to undergraduates. Scholarships include the National Merit Scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, Southern Tier Scholarship, and the Jonathan Allen Award for Leadership, and department competition scholarships. Approximately 90% of our undergraduates receive some form of financial aid. Students applying for financial aid should complete the (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) FAFSA and the Alfred University Financial Aid Application.
Admission Requirements / Application
In reviewing applications, the Admissions Committee considers the following factors most important: rigor of high school curriculum, grades, extracurricular involvement, recommendations, and standardized test scores (students may submit results from the ACT or the SAT). Students applying to the School of Art and Design must submit a portfolio. For freshmen entering in fall 1998, the middle 50% had SAT scores between 1050 and 1250, ACT scores between 24 and 28, and a B/B+ high school average. The regular decision application and portfolio deadline is February 1 and the early decision deadline is December 1.
